Why Applied AI Is Becoming a Competitive Advantage for University Graduates

For generations, universities have prepared students to enter the workforce. That mission hasn't changed. But the workforce has.


Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming how organizations operate, how employees create value and, perhaps most importantly, who has the ability to build something new. Much of the public conversation has focused on whether AI will replace jobs. While that question deserves thoughtful discussion, I believe an even more important shift is already underway.


Artificial intelligence is lowering the barriers to entrepreneurship.


For the first time, a single entrepreneur can accomplish work that once required an entire team. Market research, software development, content creation, data analysis, customer engagement and operational planning can all be accelerated through responsible use of AI. Technology hasn't replaced creativity, leadership or human judgment—but it has dramatically expanded what one person can achieve.


That changes the conversation for higher education.


Universities can no longer think only about preparing students for jobs that already exist. We also have a responsibility to prepare graduates to identify opportunities, solve complex problems and create new ventures that strengthen their communities and the economy.


This is where applied AI becomes a competitive advantage.


The graduates who will distinguish themselves over the next decade won't necessarily be those who know the most about artificial intelligence. They'll be the ones who understand how to combine AI with critical thinking, ethical decision-making, communication and deep disciplinary expertise to solve real-world problems.

Recent research suggests that the labor market is already evolving in this direction.


Economists have found that AI is changing hiring patterns long before it causes widespread job displacement. In many industries, employers are rethinking entry-level work as routine tasks become increasingly automated. At the same time, they continue to place a premium on uniquely human skills—judgment, creativity, collaboration and strategic thinking—augmented by the effective use of AI.


In other words, the competition isn't simply between people and artificial intelligence.

It's increasingly between professionals who know how to leverage AI responsibly and those who don't.


For students, that reality presents both a challenge and an opportunity.


The good news is that universities like Penn State are responding.


Penn State has made AI literacy a university-wide priority, recognizing that artificial intelligence is not just a topic for computer science majors. Whether students study business, communications, engineering, education, healthcare or the liberal arts, understanding AI's capabilities, limitations and ethical implications is becoming an essential part of professional preparation.


I believe that approach reflects an important shift in higher education.


AI literacy shouldn't be viewed as another technical skill to add to a résumé. It should be viewed as a form of career readiness.

It is the ability to ask better questions.


To evaluate information critically.


To recognize where automation creates value—and where human expertise remains indispensable.


To understand not only what AI can do, but what it should do.


That distinction may become one of the defining characteristics of successful professionals over the next decade.


The implications are especially significant here in Pennsylvania.


Our Commonwealth is making substantial investments in artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, research infrastructure and technology commercialization. Universities, government agencies and private industry are increasingly collaborating to position Pennsylvania as a leader in the emerging AI economy.


That's encouraging because Pennsylvania has always been a place where innovation and industry intersect.


As AI reshapes sectors ranging from manufacturing and healthcare to agriculture and financial services, our greatest competitive advantage won't simply be having access to powerful technology.


It will be developing people who know how to apply it responsibly.


That is particularly true for entrepreneurship.


Historically, launching a business often required significant capital, specialized technical expertise and the ability to hire talent across multiple disciplines. Today, applied AI is reducing many of those barriers. Entrepreneurs can validate ideas faster, build prototypes more efficiently, automate repetitive tasks and focus more of their energy on solving meaningful problems for customers.


The result is not fewer entrepreneurs. It has the potential to create more. More founders. More innovators. More small businesses.

More opportunities to build solutions that strengthen Pennsylvania's communities and economy.


That is why I believe universities should think differently about entrepreneurship education.


Teaching students how to write a business plan is still valuable.


Teaching them how to identify problems, leverage AI responsibly, test ideas quickly and create value in uncertain environments may prove even more important.


The future belongs to graduates who are curious enough to embrace change, thoughtful enough to question it and confident enough to use new technologies responsibly.

Artificial intelligence will undoubtedly reshape the workplace.

But I believe its greatest impact may be something even more exciting.

It will empower more people to become creators instead of simply consumers, innovators instead of observers and entrepreneurs instead of applicants.


Helping students prepare for that future isn't simply an investment in their careers.

It's an investment in Pennsylvania's future.
